Leader Alan. Fourteen riders set out on a cold morning with a biting wind to Walkern passing through the village to Cromer where branching off the main road headed toward Cumberlow Green into Rushden.

From Rushden still into the wind the riders pushed on to Roe Green before passing through Sandon to Therfield and onto the long descent into Royston.

Much needed hot refreshments were enjoyed before resuming the journey on very undulating lanes to Barkway the wind seeming to still be into the riders faces, this area being very open. Close to Anstey the route headed westward through Wyddial down into Buntingford and now in slightly sheltered conditions through Aspenden, Westmill and Nasty back to Watton via Dane End and Whempstead, a very hard fought 44 miles covered.
