Watton Wheelers – How it all began

Our club informally gathered on a winter’s day in 2001 following a meeting by the Watton Sports and Social Club to invite Villagers to form both a Cycling and a Walking Club.

Our first club run had approximately 10 riders and we cycled via the cycle paths in Stevenage to Fairlands Valley Park for a cup of tea and to get to know fellow cyclists from Watton.

In July 2002 we became known as Watton Wheelers Cycling Club, the other name considered was Beane Valley Cycling Club.

Our first Christmas Dinner was on Saturday 7th December 2002 at The Bull and our first Summer BBQ was 12th September 2004 at Watton Scout Hut, Mill Lane.

The first AGM was 22nd January 2003 where Watton Sports and Social Club members guided us how to become an official Cycling Club with a Committee Structure.

In May 2005 we became a sponsored Cycling Club. Our new sponsor was Denton Associates who continue to support us.
